Childcare Options

Here is a description of the different types of childcare which are available to you from Hattie’s Nannies.

What is a Nanny?

A nanny is a qualified professional or highly experienced individual with expertise in the care and management of children, their routine, all round development, psychology, nutrition and first aid.

A nanny is at least 18 years old and will have a minimum of two years training or +3 years experience. She should be able to cope with sole charge of the children on a regular basis.

A nanny is usually responsible for "nursery duties" including caring for the child/children, preparing meals, taking care of the laundry, keeping their rooms tidy, and school / nursery runs as required. They are not usually expected to do any housework unless by agreement (see below for a Nanny-Housekeeper) . Babysitting duties may be included.

The working hours of a Nanny depend on your individual family requirements ; for a full-time position this would usually be a 10 hour day approximately, and weekends would be free.

For live-in Nannies a room for their sole use should be provided, and normally a TV would be provided.

By law, as an Employer of a Nanny you are responsible for the payment of Income Tax and National Insurance contributions on the salary paid to your Nanny.

What is a Nanny-Housekeeper?

A Nanny-Housekeeper is usually required as the children reach school age and are out of the family home for most of the day.

Overall the duties of a Nanny-Housekeeper are to help in the running of the family home. For example school-run, childcare duties at the beginning and end of the day, organising the family shop, preparation of meals, cleaning, laundry – washing and ironing, and childcare during the school holidays as required.

The position is either live-in or live-out by agreement. If it is a live-in position a room should be provided for the sole use of the Nanny-housekeeper.

By law, as an Employer of a Nanny you are responsible for the payment of Income Tax and National Insurance contributions on the salary paid to your Nanny.

What is a Mother’s Help?

A mother’s help is a person who does not usually have a qualification in the care of children, but has some experience of childcare e.g they may have babysitting experience and/or they may have brought up their own family. The role is to work in conjunction with the parent in caring for the children and helping with household chores. In addition they will usually help with the preparation of meals.

Mother’s helps are usually suitable for the care of children over the age of 2, unless their particular experience is with children below this age. This is not to say that they would not provide excellent care for your child with some supervision.

Mother’s helps are usually live-out positions, but can be live-in. If it is a live-in position a room should be provided for sole use.

By law, as an Employer of a Nanny or Mother’s Help you are responsible for the payment of Income Tax and National Insurance contributions on the salary paid to your Nanny.

What is a Maternity Nanny?

A maternity nanny is usually employed on a short-term basis (normally 4-6 weeks) to help in the care of newborn babies. She or he is either a qualified and/or or highly experienced nanny with specific experience in caring for newborns.

Duties include help with feeding (breast-feeding or bottle feeding), sleep patterns, bathing and are usually responsible for baby laundry and keeping the nursery clean and tidy.

Hours of work are normally 5 or 6 days per week (day or night) and maybe on call 24 hours with agreed rest periods. They are usually live-in but can be live-out by arrangement.

Maternity Nannies are self-employed and thus responsible for their own Income Tax and National Insurance.
