We have listed below some of the key responsibilities that you have as an employer, however this list is by no means exhaustive. For detailed and up-to-the-minute information please contact Taxing Nannies (see Specialist Payroll Services below) or the Inland Revenue directly.

Employer’s Responsibilities

By law, as an Employer you must account for Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions on the salary paid to your Nanny or Mother’s Help.
Holiday Pay - All Full-time employees are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks paid holiday per year (including bank holidays). Part-time employees have the same holiday pro-rata.

Sick Pay - An employer is normally required to pay Statutory sick-pay (SSP) to an employee who is sick for 4 or more consecutive calendar days. This applies to part-time employees pro-rata.

Specialist Payroll Services

We strongly recommend that you save yourself the time and worry of managing your Nanny/ Mother’s Help’s tax. Taxing Nannies is a long established specialist payroll service that can take care of everything to do with your Nanny’s tax e.g PAYE, calculating tax, National insurance, payslips, and other advice for £20 per month.

Note that they will submit your Employer’s Annual Return electronically to the Inland Revenue, which will entitle you to cashback incentives as follows:

2007/8 - £100
2008/9 - £75

These are paid at the end of the tax year. These will go some way to covering the fees charged by Taxing Nannies. More information about this can be found here.
